WHAT MAKES "MUST HAVE" ?

It's interesting how certain pieces show up on almost every blogger: JC's Lita boot, Alexander Wang's Brenda Bag (among others), and the YSL Arty Oval Ring. . . What makes something a "must have" among style bloggers? Does seeing it on others affect your decision to buy it? . . . It seems almost every style blogger owns this YSL ring. If it were affordable I could see its appeal but it's easily $250. . . and many bloggers wear TWO! Did the YSL folks mail them out in multiples to bloggers? I can't imagine dropping that kind of money on this ring, especially because it's far from "unique" at this point.

What inspires your purchases? Does seeing it on your favorite blogger affect you? Celebrity? When does an item or trend get too tired to go on?

And here I am, sitting here wearing the turquoise one! Lol. Here's hoping it's not a ridiculous case of groupthink and mindless trend-following, because as bloggers you'd hope we would strive to do the opposite. I know I bought it because I love turquoise and I personally think YSL can do no wrong. Good thought-provoking question!

that ring is so expensive I can't believe so many people have one of these, or even two.
Some pieces are just so good, like this ring or the Litas, the are an amazing design. But after everybody having them I get bored...if I see one piece on every blog it annoys me...
especially when you are unsure of your own style it is easy to copy.
Ah, I don't know, I don't want to accuse anyone, but I get annoyed or bored by these must-have's often. But there will always be a personal exception :)

I never liked this ring; it's GOLD TONE for christ sake, and that means green fingers. You can find something much better and more original on etsy. So, fuck that ring.

I think that the people just viewing blogs are most influenced in a personal way. I'm not saying that all bloggers dress to impress their readers, but I'm sure that some think twice about what they're wearing before snapping a picture...and of course having the it item offers an automatic status symbol and creates some pretty twisted trends (http://www.solestruck.com/ego-and-greed-two-hundred-orange/index.html#)...

Anyway I love your blog and hate the YSL ring. C'est la vie!

i think it is different for everyone, but personally i am pretty good at purchasing items that are me without being too affected by trends or momentary lust... but it has definitely taken some time... i think patience is a good way to see if you really really want something that has a big price tag... if you wait a long while and still want it down the road then it is probably something that you truly like...

that being said, i'd never buy an arty ring just because i don't think the quality is reflective in the price... i'm all about etsy for original jewelry!

Good question, I've been considering this for some time. I've found myself pondering purchases, during which time the bloggosphere has gone wild about said item, to which my response is "I don't want it if everyone has it." It's a little immature I'll admit, but I'm actually quite horrified that so many bloggers will wear the same things as each other. Isn't the point of having a blog (for a lot of people) to express ones individuality? And the purpose of reading blogs to look for inspiration? Where's the originality and inspiration in a lot of people just wearing the same outfits?
I'm not saying I'm above copying (lord knows I'm not even close to being original) and most of my ideas (in recent years) have come from the internet. But I can say that I'm always more impressed with the people who choose the path less worn (so to speak).

that ring/ that bag/ those bloody shoes[!] lost their appeal a long time ago. after the, i dunno, 5th? person wearing them they start to look try-hard; and by the time you've seen them on bloggers the world over, they actually start to look pretty fugly.
obviously, for me the beauty of a thing is linked with its originality [you could argue: its unattainability] or lack of it; if items i once found attractive can actually become ones i turn my nose up at. but that's clearly my own annoying problem! everyone should be able to wear whatever, without judgement. no?

Your blog and your jewelry amazing.
I follow your blog because you actually have your own point of view.
And a great eye for cool.
I love that I don't see the same pix here that I see everywhere else. Over and over. And over.
With the exception of few classics (show it to me again in 20 years classic), I think popularity is a definite MINUS.
But I love this post. Always an interesting take :)

the ring: have it. love it. and NO, it does not turn my finger green.
as far as the Lita's go: HATE THEM.
A Wang Brenda bag: eh,.. not the best one he's made.

it's all about noticing the trends but not necessarily adhering to all of them!

I think it is basically the same concept as marketing and advertising. If you see something enough, without even realizing it you start to want it. Unless of course you have a very clear vision of who you are to begin with. Or it could simply be that if a ton of style bloggers like it, it just might be THAT COOL :-)
