READ WRITE RESPOND

I love dialogue that came from my recent posts. First off I want to reiterate that I am not necessarily advocating the copying of one's designs. That said, I am also not worried that YSL or Pamela Love's sales will be affected at all by my linking to an Etsy seller. Pamela Love is one of the most popular jewelry designers of the past few years . . . she's basically a household name at this point (not an easy feat for a jewelry designer . . . unless you are Tiffany, Cartier, or De Beers). I agree with my anonymous commenter that someone who spends the $16 on a knockoff would not have been the customer base for the original anyway.

One another note, I am in no way "above" trends or must-have items. Even though i'm not rushing to Zappos to buy a pair of Litas (and not just because i can't walk in 4" heels) I did troll eBay for a used A.Wang Brenda bag for a while - and I DO love breton stripes, leopard print and skinny jeans. I'm sure you guys noticed that I was a little overzealous with the studding trend as well.

Last night at work a male co-worker of mine (whose idea of fashion is a Redsox hat) noticed that I had shaved the underside of my head. He liked it and suggested I continue the shave up one side by my ear (having no knowledge of the oh-so-popular side-undercut look). I found myself foolishly explaining how that hairstyle was almost too overdone at this point so I wanted to go for something different. He looked confused at which point I remembered that we live in Burlington, Vermont - a tiny city in which I've only seen about 4 or five girls with that hairstyle. So what was I even talking about? Do I subconsciously avoid certain trends because I'm a style blog addict? I agree in the theory that women dress, not for men, but for other women. . . I think I often dress for you guys. Even though I only do one or two personal style posts a month I'm definitely aware of my readers when I get dressed, as silly as that sounds. I wish I lived in a city where people dressed with more flair. I think there is so such a simple joy that can come from putting an outfit together. (Don't get me wrong -I'm all for wearing the same black pants and sweater three days in a row as well)

I always love Sister Wolf's posts on insanely overpriced over-trended items she finds for sale online (she aptly labels these posts "hideous crap"). These fads-on-crack make me seriously wonder what the fuck is going on in the fashion world and people whose job it is to "trend forcast." Do people really want that stuff? The funniest part is that the posted-about item is often "Sold Out" or on back-order. shit blows my mind.

Ok, and now for a totally off-topic photo to end this post (cause i was eating avocado when i wrote this):
YUM!

Love these past few posts on trends, what things (should really!) cost. etc. I don't think there is anything wrong in heading on over to this Etsy seller and getting a YSL look alike ring (heading over to check it out now. that being said, I did recently break down (after much debate) and get a PS1 bag. But I do not agree tat everything you wear needs to beexpensive - its al baout high/low or whatever YOU want. Really loving your blog (as always). xo

i definitely think that being a style blog addict has a lot to do with the way you react towards certain trends. as a fellow blog addict i can attest to the fact that seeing a particular trends on multiple blogs over and over (ie the lita) i have the same sense of aversion to them. that said i think the way someone is excited by or disgusted by said trends is also due to a person's individual personality. the reason why trend forecasting and advertising is as successful as it is is due to the overwhelming percentage of the population who is willing to accept it at face value without any consideration or real critical thought. basically congratulations to you for being a free critical thinker.

def nothing wrong with liking a trend, as long as you aren't completely dependent on trends for your own personal style.

... mmm, now i want some avocado ;)

Haha yea I had a little reality check the other day when I said to someone that I'm not jumping on the Lita wagon because they're just too done -- then added that I haven't actually seen them in person yet.
...hm

In my town (population 300.000) the girls dress alike. We normal people we call it a (the name of the town) Costume. The clothes in winter are canada goose with hunter rain boots or UGGs. When something is trendy like strap sandals everyone hits the stores. They have no personal style what so ever. I find something i like on a girl on a photo on a blogg(streetstyle, mags) and like it months before it gets trendy but when it finally it arrives in my mail box it is TRENDY. My idol is Jane Birkin this winter spring and i found tons of photos of her.She so pretty but then i read the seventies are IN and i hate trend since i hate to look like everybody else.I am always in head of trends but when it gets trendy i want to throw my clothes jackets boots etc. The latest now is that if i copy a certain look from a blog that i know norwegians are reading i am afraid if someone is going to think (she looks like the pics in the blog i read) nooo.I have always stayed thru too my style but now i dont by clothes anymore. I go to vintage stores and by things people dont have a chance to by. Vintage has gotten popular here in Norway so all the vintage shops are full of peps but emty of clothes. So now i thrift in fleemarkets and my moms closet. The vintage stores has gotten a lot more expensive and that is so sad for me and they only have them i oslo(capital). I live 20 min out of the town but i dont want to go anymore since it trendy to shop at vintage stores now. Ps love your blog. Read it for some years now. Maddie

oh pleeeeease... i loved your ysl ring post. people who are "above" copies are idiots anyway... almost NOTHING is original these days and those morons don't know what they're talking about.

i like that you've given your audience ALTERNATIVES. i agree that spending $300 on a gold TONED ring is absurd. i rushed to etsy and bought one of the ysl dupes when i read your post. i believe in spending $$$$ on things i will keep for a long time, not on things that'll turn my fingers green- sorry not willing to do overtime at work for that!!!

ps-
i just opened my etsy shop (http://www.etsy.com/shop/CallaAdriano) so i'm going to giveaway an violet ombre satin studded and spiked turban on my blog! check it out!

^^^speaking of dupes, this is a jennifer behr copy. didn't feel like spending $300 to $500 dollars on spiked turbans so now I'M giving people the option to spend $40 to $50 instead ;)

This is such a good topic, it really deserves exploration. Our sense of repugnance for looks that have become trite on the internet is a healthy reaction, I think. One doesn't want to feel like a sheep being herded into the latest trend.

I wouldn't give up something I already loved, but skulls have certainly lost their appeal for me.

I think we strive to be original, and not a Mass Audience. But beyond that, I also think that certain trends have connotations: The Lita shoe says Young Blogger Twit, but a good pair of biker boots can't be pinned down to idiots.

Ombre hair looked so cool at first, and now it's kind of tragic.

I think we could have a great panel discussion on this. Maybe we can organize a Bloggers Without Influence convention!
