Go swim in some cenote's (ask some locals where the good ones are) and Maya Tulum is a nice place to stay. Drive into town to check out the graveyard as well, pretty neat.
Not sure how far from Tulum it is, but Isla Mujeres is way charming and not far from that is the underwater museum which seems way cool, though, I didn't make it out there!
Funny to stumble on your blog and see you're going to Tulum. I've been there over a dozen times. We stay on Solimon Bay (you'll pass it on the hiway to Tulum.) Must eat at Zamas and Posada Margherita (unbelievable homemade Italian food served by hot Italian surfers who have become locals over the past 10 years, don't miss it!) Amazing place to kick back, enjoy it!
Just got back from my wedding there...two places definitely not to miss eating at are Posada Margherita (AMAZING) and Hartwood, which is a new place opened by two ex-pats by way of Brooklyn. Great food and wonderful ambiance. Also on Sunday nights this place called Zebra has salsa dancing with a live band. You will absolutely Tulum! Have a blast.

MUST eat at Posada Margherita. Best Italian food ever. And this is coming from an Italian.
